Here they all are - well worth the effort! My goal was to improve my oil painting process and I definitely learned a lot in the past 30 days.

Same picture from Day 20, but different surface and size. This time I tried a watercolor underpainting on a white 9 x 12 Ampersand Pastel Board. Used the Ludwig Cool Greens again, but this time the greens and golds looked far darker.

I painted this with Terry Ludwig's Cool Green set of pastels and just a couple of Ludwig whites. The cool green set is perfect for seascapes and rocks - all the colors you need!

This green-eyed beauty was recently adopted by a good friend who sent me her photo. Roxie's just getting used to her new home, and house-mate kitty, so is apprehensive, as I think this photo showed!

Pressed for time today so decided not to do the cat I had originally planned (tho that is coming) and went for something I could do quickly. I used a rubber tipped tool to wipe out the surf areas, as opposed to painting them with white paint. I liked the result!

A big thank you to Karen Broemmelisk who posted her photo of this adorable Aussiedoodle on the Facebook group, Photos for Artists.  The photo had a sort of chiaroscuro effect with the strong darks and lights and was fun to paint.

Surf Triptych  6 x 18

 

I finished the third piece of this 3-part seascape. Each panel is 6 x 6 so together they form a triptych that is 6 x 18. I can picture all three framed together in a "float frame" so they each have a bit of space between them. I am very pleased with the way this came out!

This is part two of my 3-part triptych. Tomorrow I will post part 3 and the entire 6x18 painting.

Day 11  2016 30 Paintings in 30 Days

"Surf 1" - 6 x 6 Oil

This is the first of a three-part painting (triptych). I started with the left side section. Overall, the final painting will be 6" high x 18" wide. I plan to frame all three pieces together with just a small space between each panel. I expect to add finishing touches to this piece once I have all three completed.

Still taking a break from pet pictures, this painting is based on a photo I took last summer at Ocean Point, Maine, where the Damariscotta River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

"A New Day 2" 6 x 6 Oil

I've gone back to my favorite surface - a RayMar Feather-Lite cotton canvas panel - and what a difference! The paint lays down on the surface and does not slide around as it did on the Cradled Panel. As a result, I was able to complete this painting quickly and feel that it is closer in color to my reference photo.

"A New Day" 10 x 10" Oil

I am taking a break from painting pets with the idea that a sunrise would be fast and easy. Not so! This 10 x 10 is on a surface I have never used - a cradled panel.  My previous paintings have been on Raymar Feather Lite Panels with a medium tooth cotton canvas surface. The cradled panel is very smooth so the paint tends to slide around, especially when painting alla prima. Tomorrow's painting will be the same scene, but painted on a 6 x 6 Raymar panel so I expect it to go much faster.

"Penny"  6 x 6 Oil

"Penny" is based on a photo by Janet Harman who generously shared it on the Facebook site, Photos for Artists. For this painting, I did not start with an underpainting - and I wish I had! The underpainting establishes the strong lights and darks which is helpful as the painting progresses. But, this challenge is intended to grow as an artist and I am learning a lot.

Love little Frodo, who lives in England with my nephew's family. I have more to do on this painting, including adding his collar and tags, but it is coming along!

This was such a fun painting to do! I took this photo in Chatham, Mass when visiting friends. My Havanese, Auggie, loved sitting on the deck of the little cottage we rented overlooking Mill Pond.

Another painting from the Facebook site, Photos for Artists. Loved this picture of a Lab retrieving a tennis ball. This painting was done a little under 2 hours - finally! My process is getting faster!

Today's painting is from a photo I found on a Facebook site called Photos for Artists where photographers from around the world generously post photos for artists to use, royalty free. I loved this little dachshund with his ears flying as he turns his head. Yesterday's painting of Coco took 3 hours, so today my goal was to complete the painting in 2 hours. I was close - this one was 2-1/2 hours There is much about it I would like to refine, but keeping to my "painting a day" challenge, I will leave it as is.

Coco is my adorable 5 lb maltese-yorkie, or in other words, a "morkie".  She's full of spunk and has lots of Yorkie attitude. My theme for the first few paintings in the challenge will be Pets and Animals.
